Which Type Of Hearing Aid Is Best For You?

Health & Medical Blog

Picking out a hearing aid can be pretty difficult, since there are actually several different types to choose from. Each offers slightly different benefits which can dramatically impact your quality of life. To help you find a hearing aid that is perfect for you, you should ask yourself the following questions:

How much do you value the appearance of the hearing aid?

If you are looking for a hearing aid that is easy to conceal, then an ITC (in the canal) hearing aid might be the best choice for you. ITCs rest deep inside the canal of your ear, meaning that they are practically impossible to spot unless the viewer knows exactly what they are looking for. While external hearing aids can be camouflaged to be the same color and tone as your skin, they are still relatively easy to see. If you absolutely don't want anyone to see that you have a hearing aid, then an ITC unit is often the best choice.

How much do you value the power of the hearing aid?

On the other hand, if you are looking for a unit that is powerful and able to completely correct your hearing at a low cost, then a slightly bulkier unit might be necessary. Since it is hard to miniaturize hearing technology without driving the price up, this means that you will want an OTE (on the ear) unit, which rests behind or on your ear. Although these units are much more obvious than ITC units, they can give you more bang for your buck, meaning that they are great if you are on a budget or if you just don't care too much about appearances.

How much do you value the comfort of the hearing aid?

You also need to consider comfort, which can vary dramatically from piece to piece. If you are quite concerned about the prospect of a device inside your ear, then you can get an OTE unit to minimize the amount of material that is actually inside your ear. Since most of the device rests outside and only a small segment extends into the ear, you are dealing with a lot less intrusion than you would get with an ITC unit, where the entire unit is actually inside your ear.

This can be particularly important when it comes to children, since ear shape can change quite a bit over the course of several years. With ITC units, you would need have regular hearing aid fittings and get the entire unit reshaped on a regular basis in order to keep up with the changes to the ear's structure, whereas an OTE unit would only need to have small adjustments from time to time.
