Most people enjoy the hot and sunny weather typical in the summertime, but too much fun in the sun can be dangerous. In addition to getting sunburned, people can easily become overheated, especially children, senior citizens, and those with chronic medical conditions. There are steps you can take to prevent heat-related illnesses, however.

Wear Appropriate Summer Clothing

The clothing you choose can help you stay cool when the temperature rises. Opt for lightweight, breathable clothing. Natural fibers such as linen and cotton are best. Stay away from dark colors, as they will absorb more heat.

Skip Going Outside On Really Hot Days

Your local weather will warn you of the days where the heat index is expected to be really high. While it can be tempting to go spend the day at the beach, it's best to just stay indoors. Even the healthiest people can quickly become overheated. If you have to run errands, plan on going early in the day or waiting until evening rather than going out in the middle of the day when the temperature is highest.

Limit Exercise

Extreme heat stresses the body, and when you add the stress of exercise on top of it, problems can arise. When the humidity is also high in addition to the temperature, it can be difficult to breathe.

You should not exercise outdoors in the afternoon. If you are a regular jogger, get your run in in the early morning hours just after sunrise. If you like to walk, wait until evening just before sunset. Better still, visit the gym and get your workout indoors instead.

When the heatwave is over, you can resume your regular outdoor activities with caution. If you are unable to breathe or your chest is pounding while exercising, make sure you immediately stop the activity and rest in a cool place.

Stay Hydrated

The majority of people are walking around in a state of semi-dehydration all the time. Older people are especially prone to dehydration as their brains become less adept at signaling to the body they are thirsty. By the time you feel thirst, you are already dehydrated. When you are dehydrated, your body's cooling system cannot work as effectively. Keep a bottle of water with you at all times and drink from it regularly.

Seek Medical Attention

If you become overheated and moving to a cool place doesn't solve the problem, you may have a more serious condition, such as heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Nausea, vomiting, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, headache, and dizziness are all symptoms to watch out for.
