How Does It Work To Use A Remote Scribe Service?

Health & Medical Blog

Are you looking for ways to reduce your costs or see more patients at your medical practice? If so, you may be interested in using a remote scribe service to perform your medical charting. Here are the basics of how it works.

Contacting The Remote Scribe

The first step will be to contact the remote scribe that you will be working with during your patient visit. These remote scribes have the same experience as any nurse or medical practitioner that would be taking notes in the office for you, so there is no need to worry about their previous experience. Starting the call is much like starting a video call that you are familiar with.

Connecting To Patient Records

The remote scribe will have access to all of the patient records using the electronic medical record (EMR) system that you currently have. This means that the scribe can access past medical information as if they were working in your office on your EMR system.

Documenting The Procedure

With the remote scribe service connected to a computer in the patient room, you can resume the office visit as you normally would. You can talk to the patient freely, and the remote scribe will document what is being discussed and what procedures are being performed. As the remote scribe starts the process of documentation on their end, you can see these updates at your location to read them yourself and verify their accuracy.

It's important that you are verbally stating the various things you want to be recorded during the office visit. Unlike working with a nurse in the patient room, the remote scribe is unable to do things like read the temperature or blood pressure of a patient on the medical devices. You will need to verbally state what they are so that they can be recorded.

Ordering Tasks

The remote scribe also has access to perform various ordering tasks on behalf of the physician. They can put in an order for medication on behalf of the patient, order a referral to another doctor for a medical procedure, and even order various tests that need to be done.

Reviewing Documentation

When the patient visit is finished, you can look at your EMR system to verify that everything has been entered properly into the appropriate fields. This ends up saving a lot of time on your end because you can visit the next patient instead of dealing with medical charting.
